about

Ryan: This song is basically a critique of the Baby Boomers who styled themselves as hippies in the 1960s but turned their backs on the movement(s) and gave up. Boomers getting lazy and greedy is essentially the reason for the world’s current state. So they’re slurping up everything and leaving nothing for the next generation.

These are the same people who complain about no-one being “bi-partisan” anymore and about kids being on the phones too much (when they’re actually more brainwashed by it than we are).

Like “Mar-a-Lago”, this song is set in a sort of hyper-near future where visible cracks are starting to show in the fabric of society and people are dealing with it (or not) in different ways.

It’s sung from the perspective of a millenial or gen-x guy who sees it all slipping away and is using all sorts of ways to cope - alcohol, drugs, and obsessing over a girl he can’t have.

lyrics

[Verse 1]

How you fixed for whiskey?
Can I get you one?
Let’s turn on some music
Forget about the sun

I’ll make you a promise
I’ll keep you from harm
I can’t seem to separate
The table from the farm
Anymore...

[Chorus 1]

Everybody feels like we’re running out of time
Nothing lasts forever and we’re running out of wine
Vampires of the future just wanna get along
Thought I heard them coming in that old protest song

[Verse 2]

How’s your boyfriend doing?
Heard he’s feeling grim
Heard he quoted Engels
When you confronted him

Won’t you come on over?
I’ve got reds and blues
I know what I’m doing
When I imagine you
And me...

[Chorus 2]

Everybody feels like we’re running out of time
Nothing last forever and we’re running out of wine
Vampires of the future just wanna get along
Thought I heard them coming in some old protest song

[Verse 3]

The stations are abandoned
No place left to go
Working groups are working
To learn what they don’t know

Heard your old professor
On the radio
Elephant and Castle
Kew and Walthamstow

[Chorus 3]

Everybody feels like we’re running out of time
Nothing last forever and we’re running out of wine
Vampires of the future want it all for free
Vampires of the future seen all there is to see
Vampires of the future bred in captivity
Vampires of the future been witnessing to me
